Long Time, No See

Initially, I had planned a nice 'welcome back' post that would include pics of my life on the family farm and my bonfire ensemble that included camo and leopard print in the same outfit! But then, I realized that it's gorgeous here this week and it's much more interesting to show sunny days and spring outfits than making a big hullabaloo over my moving back to VA. Which I did and am so happy to be back. :)

My lovely sister-in-law gave me several hand-me-downs that I love and can't wait to wear- this dress is one of them. It was so comfortable but I felt really cute in it all day.

I haven't been posting recently because I am annoyed with my self photography skills (more specifically my LACK of photography skills). All my pics are grainy, incorrectly exposed, and even worse when I post them to blogger they lose sharpness and quality and it really, really , REALLY annoys me. But I decided to stop being a perfectionist and go ahead and document these pics. Here are some pretty good outfits, terrible photos, and the debut of all three of my new handbags (yes, three....new...handbags....don't judge):

So, I have three new handbags. As much as I love being Dara's twin when I carry this one, I wanted some lighter bags for Spring/ Summer. I got all three of these bags for $70 so I don't feel too guilty for my excess. The grey one is Olsenboye from JCP and was $5 (originally $40), the bright orange one was the most expensive at $50 (orig. $98), and the tan leather one is St John's Bay via JCP clearance for $15 (orig $40).

The flowy top and jacket hide my short waist and the skinny bottom emphasizes my hips. Just thought I would share for all you inverted triangle, short waisted ladies out there.

Today I liked what I wore. I did not like how I felt. I left work early with a headache and proceeded to sit on the couch in my pajamas eating and watching Mad Men for several hours while having a mini quarter life crisis. "What am I doing with my life?", "What is wrong with me?", and "I want a baby" all entered my brain. Deep stuff. And now I am blogging about my outfit. At least I have that figured out.

I love comfy outfits like this on the weekend. Actually, I love comfy outfits like this all the time but it doesn't always work like that. Too bad I can't be a stay at home wife.

Also, these are those $11 boots folded down for a different look. I am sure I will make fun of myself for wearing these in a few years but at least I didn't pay good money to look like a fool :)

I had the day off today to take care of some appointments and I spent the time in between running some errands. After dropping my black boots off at the cobbler I walked to the local pharmacy on the corner which still has a lunch counter. How cute is that?! I ordered a coca cola classic and sipped it while browsing vintage clothing at a nearby shop. I felt like I had stepped back in time (cobbler? soda fountain? browsing the latest wool suits). Anyways I had a good little time in my Americana fantasy.

This outfit has pretty much been done before but it is so comfortable and cozy I couldn't resist putting it on this morning. In addition to being comfortable and warm, it also makes me feel polished and put together. If only all my clothes could make me feel this way...

Looking Back

My outfit yesterday reminded me of something I would have worn on my vacation to Germany/ Austria last May. I loved everything I wore and packed and was so pleased with all my photos. I felt comfortable and stylish and practical. I definitely feel that we did not stick out as an American tourists (based on looks alone- I am sure my blank stares and confused look gave me away). Here are some of my outfits from that trip:

As you can see my uniform was : Skinny pants/ Jeans + Button up/ Blouse + Leather jacket/ Blazer+ Scarf + Black moto boots or Vans. We were staying with friends and ate out at low key places so I never really had to dress up for anything. I carried my grey cross body bag everywhere.

If my lifestyle and climate suited this, I would love to dress in a similar way everyday (darn you freezing winters and blazing hot summers!). Looking back it was a really good lesson on remixing, versatility, and the power of accessories (especially scarves). I took three scarves with me and utilized them often to change up a look I had already worn. It taught me that I prefer simple classics with an edge and it also taught me that I probably have way too many clothes. I have done some closet purging recently, getting rid of things that no longer suit my personal style but almost all of the items I took to Europe have remained and probably will remain for quite some time.

I need another pair of boots like I need a hole in my head but these were $11 guys. Evidently I cannot resist cheap boots. I walked into Target for some groceries and walked out with two pairs of shoes... and groceries. These beauties also fold down for a different look so it is double the deal if you think about it.

Looking forward to a relatively lazy weekend (the best). Going to see a classic country cover band tonight with Dara and hubby. Should fit in quite well with my denim shirt and biker boots.

Looks like I had to balance out those brights with an outfit completely void of color. This was pretty comfy though aside from the heel falling off my boot at work. I found these black leather boots at a thrift store several years ago for 6 dollars. They have done well for how much I have worn them and how cheap they were (how is that for cost per wear) Guess they finally need a visit to the shoe doctor.

Dara is home from California (for good)! We hung out all day and night on Friday and I am hoping to see her again Monday. My life feels complete with my best friend home.
I can wear eye makeup. So good to feel like myself again!
Lasik is awesome (minus the dry eyes but I can deal- Refresh Optive is my friend)
4 day weekend. State employees get "Lee- Jackson Day" in addition to MLK day. It pays to live in the South sometimes...

New Eyes

Well, I did end up getting Lasik. Good news: I can see! Bad news: No makeup for one week! I never realized how much eye makeup I regularly wear until this week (two different eyeliners, two coats of mascara, 2-3 eyeshadows- everyday- that is what happens when you are borderline ginger). I even have an extra ten minutes in the morning to curl my hair.

Anyways the surgery went well though I am having some issues with dryness (which is normal). I am so glad to not have to worry about wearing contacts or glasses anymore! I don't think I will regret it.

Nothin' like wearing glasses all week to make me feel frumpy. I took about 50 outfit pics today (thanks to my new wireless shutter release- sooo much easier to be weird and take pictures of myself in my room this way!) This is the only one suitable for the internet and half of my face is missing:

I wore this last Thursday for the car ride to visit my grandmother. We spent our time there chatting, antiquing, and eating Christmas leftovers (my favorite). This little break from work has left me with alot of time for reflection. I don't really believe in New Year's resolutions (and have never really made them) but this year I have decided on setting some things I want to focus on:

Continue working on and improving my photography skills
Continue de-cluttering and keeping my home in shape via FlyLady
Have a purpose and direction with my time. Spend less time doing mindless things on the internet or watching crappy TV.

Somehow putting it all on the internet makes it more official. Welcome 2012!

Hope everyone had a great holiday. I have been immersing myself in my new photography books the last couple days and playing with my new camera in between work and maintaining the house. I have to say I am in love and hope that my enthusiasm will continue as I venture to make photography a lifetime hobby and skill. In fact these photos right here are my first somewhat successful attempts at shooting in manual mode. The light was very low and I did not use a flash. I am quite proud of myself! Especially when you compare it to these which were shot under similar light conditions.

This outfit was perfectly comfortable and cozy for a day of learning about aperture and shutter speed and ISO. This new snood was one of three infinity type scarves I got for Christmas. That's what happens when you tell everyone what you want!

The plaid shirt is a hand-me-down from Allie and she found these great jeans (BR brand) at Goodwill for me while I was in town. The blazer is super comfy (the inside is sweatshirt material) that I got from Macy's junior's department. I'm excited to dress this up with a cute skirt...

Well this entire outfit is made up from Allie cast-offs, except for the booties. I felt artistic in this, I think because of all the strong and fun detailing in the top. :)

Busy Busy

The holiday season is hectic for me lately. I hate that because I really believe it should be a time for reflection and quiet moments with cherished family. I am a person who needs alot of "quiet time". I have recently discovered this about myself since I have been saying "yes" to alot of events after work and it has left me extremely frazzled and feeling overwhelmed. It sounds lame but I really feel my best when social commitments are left for the weekend only. A classic introvert, I really cherish my alone time!

During these busy times, I have found it stress- relieving to spend time working on this blog and reading other blogs. What a great hobby I have found...

On planning outfits...

My lack of posting is simply due to my lack of planning. I am a firm believer in planning outfits (as evidenced by my previous post...) I fail miserably when I don't. Mornings are not my friend and I am always rushing around no matter what time I get up (Darn you computer and your sidetracking ways!) This results in haphazardly pulling some crap together, taking it off, putting on something different, trying a different necklace, taking it off, trying different shoes, etc... until I run out of time and have no choice but to leave the house in whatever is on! If I plan the night before my mornings are so much easier and I actually like the way I look.

In other news I ordered a big girl camera on Cyber Monday and the outfit pics in low light are about to get a whole lot easier (I hope). Obviously I did not invest in this camera for this blog with our 12 followers and all but it will be a nice side benefit...

Oh- and to the person who googled "taking a crap in my leggings" and found this blog today... hope you are taking care of that!

Thanksgiving Wardrobe Plan

So I obviously had the afternoon off if I had the time to do this post of outfits I am planning to wear this weekend.... Plus this makes me a dork but I really like picking outfits out ahead of time. I even do it to de-stress sometimes. So here is what I have planned to wear this Thanksgiving break:

Thanksgiving Day:


Sweater- Goodwill; Dress underneath sweater, socks- Target; Leggings- Zara; Boots- Marshalls

Leggings are a given. Comfort is essential when you are planning on playing on the floor with your nephew and eating and drinking yourself silly. I am loving my new "slouch socks" from Target. I rocked the leggings, sweater, and slouch socks for Thanksgiving circa 1993 and it was a good one so I am pretty sure this Thanksgiving is gonna be awesome...

Black Friday and Shooting Guns:

The Story of How I Overcame Contact Lens Intolerance

WARNING: Very long and probably boring post ahead... Please skip unless you are interested in eyecare.

All through high school and college I wore contacts all day and all night... no problems at all besides a little redness. I was even able to wear them my first year and a half out of college at my first real job sitting and staring at a computer all day. Don't ask me why, but around September 2008 I found myself unable to wear contacts anymore without being extremely uncomfortable and distracted. Looks like I abused my eyes by overwearing them for too many years... Around this time I also switched birth control methods. I had been taking low dose name brand birth control for years and was able to afford it because the state subsidized the cost because I was a student. All of a sudden I was not a student anymore and my husband (fiance at the time) was unemployed and just out of grad school and I was the breadwinner on my piddly salary. To cut costs I switched to a generic birth control (which turned out to have higher amounts of estrogen). I really think this is what sparked the whole issue... My eyes became so dry that my vision became distorted. Any time I would stare at something a long time it would become really fuzzy and hard to focus. I went to many crappy eye doctors. One put punctal plugs in my tear ducts. I tried restasis. I was prescribed steroids, and antibiotic eyedrops. One idiot tried to sell me lasik. I tried many OTC eye drops. I took disgusting fish oil supplements.

And most importantly, I stopped taking my oral contraceptives. I saw a mild improvement in my eyes after being off of birth control for several months. I gave up on contacts for a while and wore my glasses 100% of the time for a few months. I was miserable and my confidence was low but at least my eyes weren't bothering me all the time. I got married in May 2009 and wore my glasses all day and put a pair of contacts in right before the ceremony. They were irritating me by the end of the reception.... I brought a week's worth of daily disposable contacts on my honeymoon with me and I found that I could wear them a little better if I tried a new pair everyday... I was on the right track...

Flash forward a few months to my next eye checkup. My OD and I agreed that the daily disposable contacts were the best tolerated. He mentioned though how my eyes were showing signs of allergic reaction. I do not have ANY allergies that I know of. None to medications, no food allergies, not even seasonal allergies. But it turns out my eyes are extremely allergic to something year round. I was given some OTC drops (Alaway) and a Rx for Pataday and instructed to try both (one at a time) and see if I noticed any improvement. I noticed a HUGE improvement with both drugs and the Alaway was way cheaper so that is what I stuck with. My eyes no longer itched, were not as red, and did not burn as much. And they were also able to handle contacts better. I wish I would have know this sooner....

Another important discovery that happened within this last year was my discovery of Clear Care. My dad was having similar issues with his contacts and his doc recommended Clear Care. He was so impressed by the way this solution improved his contacts' wearability that I went ahead and gave it a try. Let me tell you that my daily disposable contacts feel SO MUCH better when I let them soak in Clear Care the night before than when I take them fresh out of the package. Clear Care works by turning hydrogen peroxide into saline overnight through an enzymatic reaction, so when you put them on in the morning they are completely balanced with the environment of your eye. Some preservative in the storage of contact lenses must irritate my eyes because I swear brand new contacts burn when I put them in!

So now I can wear contacts almost everyday if I want. I can't wear them like I used to (which you are not supposed to do anyways...) but if I really don't want to wear my glasses I don't have to and I am so glad.

So here is what is working for me now:

Alaway twice a day (once in AM before putting contacts in and once in PM after taking them out)
1- Day Acuvue Tru Eye Daily Disposable Contact Lenses (I wear these 3-4 times before throwing away)
Clear Care Disinfecting Solution
I always make sure to thoroughly remove all my eye makeup before bed. Neutrogena Foaming Fresh facewash does the trick most of the time but if I am being really diligent I will also mix Johnson's Baby Shampoo with water and clean my eyes with a cotton ball.
I try not to overwear my contacts. I take them out as soon as I get home from work. On the weekends I only put them on if I am going out.

Occasionally I use:

Eye Wash with an eye cup to flush out allergens and makeup
Blink Tears and Blink Contacts as needed

Allie should recognize this lovely gray cropped jacket. She gave it to me well over a year ago, and although I've worn it before, it has sat in the 'dry clean pile' since we've been in CA. I'm glad that it's been to the cleaners because it is such a versatile piece and I'm a sucker for gray clothes. I'm also happy with these shoes. After much searching, I finally found a plain black shoe with low heel to wear with jeans that was within my budget.

I have been wearing my glasses for years and years but I still can't get used to the look of myself in them. I feel that glasses really don't suit me and I never feel I look my best in them. There was a time not too long ago (roughly fall 2008- spring 2011) where I suffered from contact lens intolerance and many eye problems (allergies, dry eye syndrome, etc) that forced me to wear my glasses 99% of the time. I felt really bad about the way I looked at that time. I spent alot of time and money on glasses, eye drops, doctors, prescriptions, supplements, and different contact lenses before finding a routine that allowed me to wear my contacts again. I plan to share this information on the blog in the near future because I know someone will google it and find the information on how I overcame my contact lens intolerance useful. But for now I am just sharing this tidbit of myself because I am sharing pictures of myself in my glasses today.

I decided I liked the way they looked today because they "matched my outfit" for some reason... maybe the studious feel of a collared shirt and sweater on top?? My husband despises these glasses and thinks they look like Junior Soprano's:

Alright, fine they are very similar. But, I prefer them sometimes because they make a statement. I have several other pairs that are bold, but not as bold as the ones I am wearing today.

I love this outfit and it was created in less than 2 minutes. I suppose all of my best outfits just happen like that, when I just know what I want to wear and it works, without a lot of thought and frustration. Finally Fall

Being an East-coaster, I adore the fall season. I love the change of colors, the smell of the leaves, the crispness of the air. I adore the clothes. I thought that I was in an autumnal hell out here in Northern California, when September and October both arrived without a drop in temperature, but an increase! We are a land of redwoods, and other evergreen trees, so I thought my need for fall colors wouldn't be met. And, then, November came. And although it cannot match the splendor of a Virginia fall, we do have leaves turning, the smell of leaves burning, and finally a chill in the air. Ahh, at last, I can break out the clothes I love!

Allie was right, I got some great deals and fabulous clothes while shopping with her in VA. I almost don't know how to dress myself for all of the great choices I now have! It's such a great feeling to walk into a closet full of clothes I love.

Can you believe I found these pants at Goodwill? I nearly fainted when I saw them and tried them on and they were perfect. I have been wanting pants like this for a while now but I was hesitant to spend the money on a silhouette that was a little different and maybe too trendy. That is one of the reasons I love thrifting. The price is right and you can really try out different looks that are a little more risky without fear of blowing your budget on something that doesn't work.

Let's just pretend those wrinkles aren't there. Sitting down at a desk all day does not do favors for your post- work blog photos...

Not my most figure- flattering outfit I've ever worn but I felt comfortable and stylish when I wore this on Saturday to go thrifting and to my little brother's birthday party (he is ten years old! double digits!). I am staying home today to get stuff done around the house and recovering from a 3 hour hike we did yesterday (ouch). I am renewing my commitment to keeping a clean house after taking today off to get it all straight. The problem is I love having a clean house but don't always take the steps to get there. Good thing there is Flylady...

I got this awesome bag from Target on clearance for $8 while Dara was in town. She snatched up the same one a few days earlier. While we were growing up we always had many of the same wardrobe items (and we still do!).

I have had this scarf for several years but never tied it like this. I like it but I think it does add some unneeded bulk to my upper half...

My local Target had a great selection of jewelry on clearance. I don't have much gold toned jewelry so I stocked up a little:

I know this pic looks staged, and it was, but I really have been sitting on the sofa, in this outfit, browsing the internet. I finally decided that it's long overdue to publish a post, and why not let it be of what I wear to hang out? Sure, there are days when I wear pajama pants and my faded Myrtle Beach sweatshirt, but more often that not, I try to find something cute, comfortable and Cate friendly (i.e. something I won't completely freak out over if it gets stained, something that doesn't wrinkle terribly and is easy to move around in). I feel better looking cute even if all I'm doing is watching Law and Order re-runs, followed by Jerseylicious.

So I thrifted this cape LAST YEAR and had not worn it til yesterday. It is quite a statement maker in case you couldn't tell. BRIGHT red and huge. But for some reason I had an itch to wear it. Maybe because capes are a more mainstream trend this year.... but I like to think that it is because my confidence in myself has increased since this time last year and I feel more comfortable wearing things that make me happy without fearing what others will say...

I gave this outfit a little bit more of a boho vibe than I would usually wear because of the 70's feel of this vintage cape (which had red fringe on the bottom that I cut off- it looked like a wearable afghan). Also, I feel very inspired by the American Southwest right now and it is showing in this outfit. I have always loved turquoise jewelry, denim, and native prints... just never all together before.

Also, I only got one "red riding hood" joke today at work. People must have better taste than I thought haha.

Really enjoyed wearing this outfit today. Picked this dress up at my local consignment store last night with Dara and the best part was that it was "free" with my store credit. It is boiled merino wool so it is cozy, warm, and comfy. I will be wearing this at least once a week this fall/ winter I am sure.

Since arriving here for her visit, Dara and I have been shopping together twice. We got some great stuff for her Fall wardrobe (great deals and I hope she will share some of them on this blog) and I am so happy to have helped her find some useful and cute pieces. I think I enjoy shopping for other people as much (if not more) than I enjoy shopping for myself!

Yeah so another week went by and no posts. I had a work conference at the beginning of the week and I have no problems admitting that I was lazy the rest of the time. I am pretty good at being lazy (I like to call it "prioritizing my health and wellness"). But the little break from blogging I have been having has made me realize that I like blogging because I like clothes (way too much...always have and always will). And I like to share with my BFF (who is in town by the way!) I don't really care if not alot of people read it (I kind of prefer it that way). I basically just do it to express myself creatively and see if stuff looks good on me.

I am on the fence about this outfit. It felt comfy but I am not 100% convinced it is a winner. I think my face looks tired because of the color of the blouse. Too bad I already took the tags off.

The lighting was perfect for these pics today, so I had to post them! Once again, I have dressed myself in an outfit I really like from the waist up. I like this loose fitting top paired with the printed scarf and pearls...I felt a little bit "Breakfast Club" in it, plus it was super comfy.

I love these leggings and have been living in them all week. I have created some really cute outfits with them, but this one just isn't working. Especially with my hubby's blue socks and the tan boots. Hmm...sometimes I take the momswear a little too far...

I have said it before and I will say it again: I adore Fall. Not only for all the conventional reasons, but because I enjoy the change of pace. Something about the change of seasons and heading into winter makes me feel homey and relaxed. I can wear my favorite slippers, snuggle on the couch, and drink a cup of tea and not feel guilty like I should be doing something else more "productive".

Fall is my favorite season to dress for (whose favorite season is not Fall?) and I prefer casual dressing on the weekends to my work outfits. And I have finally discovered the beauty of leggings. Other than the ones I wore in grade school (with a turtleneck and oversized Disney sweatshirt- gotta love 1992), I have been resistant to this trend. I think all the sorority girls who wore non opaque black leggings as pants with a tshirt and Ugg boots kind of ruined the look for me. But the comfiness of these leggings cannot be denied. They are quite thick and opaque and I think with longer layers on top I can handle the leggings as pants deal. This outfit was perfect for spending a long time in the car and eating my birthday food all day :)

The weather was finally nice enough to bust out my new Missoni pumps from Target (they are suede and it has been raining nonstop here). I wasn't planning on buying these, but I saw them in the store and really thought they would go well with my wardrobe (which consists mostly of neutrals in case you didn't notice....) I tried them on and they were pretty comfy. These are definitely shoes for a desk day though. The heel is much higher than I am completely comfortable walking around alot in.

Finally got the nerve to wear my new ankle boots to work today. With bare legs. And a dress... Have to say I did get some strange looks. But I really had fun with this new look and I like the way this turned out. And that is really all that matters.

J. Job Title: Mom. Before we moved to CA, I worked in the real estate industry, in various roles. My real job aspiration is to become a teacher.

K. Kids: One daughter, Catherine Leese, who we call Cate. She is 3 going on 30, creative and terribly funny.

Sitting here this Sunday morning and wasting time on the internet. Why not do this meme I just read over at Wardrobe Oxygen!?

A. Age: 25, but I will be 26 in less than a week!

B. Bed size: Queen and my husband hates it. I evidently kick my legs vigorously and move around all night while I am sleeping (I call that my "exercise"). Doesn't bother me but it seems to wake him up alot. We will probably end up in twin beds side by side some day like a 50's sitcom!

C. Chore that you hate: Dishes. I am doomed to be miserable my whole life because I hate dishes and there will always be dishes to do. We don't have a dishwasher though. Hopefully I will hate doing dishes less when there is a dishwasher.

D. Dogs: I have two cats. I like dogs as long as they are well behaved and don't smell bad. And don't jump on me. And don't bark too much.... I guess I am a cat person!

E. Essential start to your day: Black tea. I drink hot tea almost every morning (sometimes with sugar and sometimes black). Coffee gives me jitters and upsets my stomach.

I. Instruments you play: My voice. I am a singer- Alto (well I was). I did choir all through middle and high school and I sang in an all girls' college a capella group all throughout college. I miss singing in a group so much. I always loved making music. My husband and I sing together alot. He plays guitar and we alternate singing lead and harmonies. I taught him how to harmonize (he has a pretty good voice) and he can harmonize almost anything now.

J. Job title: I am a registered dietitian and public health nutritionist for my local health district. I work with low income families as a state employee which means I have a job that is mostly fulfilling but pays terribly.

K. Kids: I love kids. I see them everyday at work and I hope to have one or two for myself in a few years.

L. Live: Virginia. Hope to move to the beautiful mountains of Virginia soon (aka the most beautiful place on earth).

U. Underwear: Mesh and lace bikini or boy shorts. I hate thongs and I don't understand the women who can stand wearing them. They are terrible!

V. Vegetable you hate: I am a dietitian and I hate alot of vegetables. I really hate raw celery and cucumbers (but I can eat shredded cucumber in sushi or sandwiches) and I don't really like broccoli or cauliflower. I love spinach, kale, carrots, sweet potato, onions, tomatoes, and peppers.

W. What makes you run late: Changing my outfit at the last minute.

X. X-Rays you’ve had: Just the standard ones at the dentist. I have never broken a bone or had to have a stitch. Not very accident prone I guess.

Y. Yummy food that you make: I have been making some good soups lately. I make alot of good mexican food. My husband usually likes everything I make so I guess I am a decent cook (but he is not picky). I make a really good homemade pizza : homemade crust, pesto, feta cheese, jalapenos, mushrooms, and spinach. YUM!

Z. Zoo animal: I love watching the baby animals wherever they are. Mike and I took my little brother to the zoo last spring and we literally watched the lion cubs play for about an hour.

Bare Legs and Booties

So back in '07, booties started making their way into stores and magazines. I was appalled and disgusted. I thought they were so ugly. And then I kept seeing them... And then I bought them and wore them with black tights. And now I am almost fully comfortable with wearing them with bare legs.

Dress Bragging

So Dara thought she might be a little tacky when she shared the prices of her thrifted treasures. Well, I am gonna step that up a notch and be truly tacky and brag about the awesome deals I found at Ross last week. I was needing to find some dresses for a wedding we went to this past weekend. I literally have one dress to be worn on formal occasions and I have been wearing the same thing for the past three years. I was pleasantly surprised by what I was able to find:

This Jessica Simpson dress was found in the clearance section. I fell in love with the cut and color and it was really unlike anything I currently own (in a good way).

The first dress was worn for cocktails the night before the wedding. I hate to admit it but the thing was way too tight. I was blinded by the prettiness and the price. It zipped up all the way but was rather uncomfortable. I will keep it around to wear for short evenings and more dressy outings but I feel like that thing is not gonna get worn alot.On the other hand, the second (more demure) dress was worn to the actual wedding and I am in love with it. OK let's just get this out of the way and say I have a hard time keeping my eyes open in the daylight when I am not wearing sunglasses. This makes for some interesting self- photo sessions :) But seriously, thank you so much to my fellow zero hipped woman (perhaps you are a 14 year old?) who donated these perfectly fitting pants to my local Goodwill. I owe you many thanks because you have filled a wardrobe void of 2-3 years with the perfect grey trousers for less than $4. This has allowed me to make many more outfits suitable for work and given me extra money to spend on new pumps from the Missoni line from Target.

Not to mention that in addition to fitting perfectly, they are machine washable, flatter my figure by balancing out my top half, and basically feel like pajamas. I don't know why you donated them but hopefully you will be granted with good thrifting karma in return...

Nifty Thrifty

Thrifting. I love the idea of it, the act of it and the results of it but I often get discouraged and impatient with it. A good thrifting run can provide a runner-like high and on bad days a sugar crash. I know this may sound dramatic, but if I leave the Goodwill store empy handed I'm bummed out yet I'm even more bummed if I buy something I didn't love. If I go into a thrift store at the wrong time (i.e. I'm tired or Cate's tired or it's crowded) I get flustered and frustrated and the shopping trip just isn't fun. On the other hand, I have some great 'me time' sessions at our local GW, going through item by item, row by row. Somehow it's calming and fun for me...more than a trip to the mall or department store (probably b/c I'm not so worried about the wallet and of course, the fun is in finding a great vintage piece or steal).

Today was one of those great thrifting days. Here's what I got:

My best find- a Pollini bag. I'd never heard of the brand before but I knew it was of good quality, I loved the detailing and I'd been looking for a cross body bag like this for Fall. I got this for $7.99. Similar ones that I found online sell for $75.00 or more. That just makes me smile. It would have been fine if this were a Wal-Mart purse but it makes the find all the more fun that its a vintage Pollini. :)

I love this mulberry colored purse. I found this before I found the one mentioned above and loved the color and shape. It's a roomy cross body bag that will be fashionable, add a pop of color and keep me hands free which will be a huge help while out with a three year old. I got this for $3.50, tags still on it.

The thrifting gods smiled upon me with this one today. We went to the Salvation Army, spur of the moment, and I found this navy, linen moto-style jacket. I have been longing for a jacket like this since last winter and this one is perfect. It has great detailing, is fully lined and is unique. Plus, it is brand new, tags still on it, DKNY brand....for $8.99. I'm a happy girl.

Again, I've been wanting more jackets for Fall/Winter and I love this classic style. White House/Black Market brand, in good condition...$6.99.

Ruffles, flowers, and ugly shoes

I took a risk (for me) and paired a skirt with booties and bare legs. Something I have not done before but this girly outfit needed an edge. This is an acquired taste I am sure and something my future daughter will laugh at as being so ugly but I kind of liked it and it was fun.

Here is my now functional and friendly closet. I'm so happy with it that I go in there to hang out sometimes...

I have a teeny walk-in, nothing fancy, but boy does it feel luxurious when I can see all of my outfits! I threw a bunch of stuff away and took a huge bagful of clothes, shoes and accessories to Goodwill. I even got rid of a few things that I was just 'holding onto' because I was afraid I'd miss it even though I hadn't worn it in years or because I didn't know how to style it.

I organized my jewelry in such a way that was pretty and functional. Peg board and thumb tacks. The scarves are hung by shower curtain rings. I've seen much fancier versions of this on Pinterest but this was cheap and easy and it works.

I've used this shoe organizer for shoes, obviously, but also for more jewlery and my belts and hats.

In case you don't remember what it looked like before... now you see why I am so happy...

Target Euna pump review

I am looking lovingly down at these babies:

These are my new Target Euna pumps and I highly recommend. They look more expensive than they actually are ($24.99), the heel is not too high (2.5"), they are fairly comfortable, and right on trend this season. As the reviewers on the website say, they do run quite small. I ordered my normal size (8.5) and a half size up and the 9 fits perfectly. This was my first day wearing them and I wore them all day at work and then shopping afterwards. My feet did not feel great as expected, but no blisters and no terrible soreness. Pretty good for a first day wearing cheap, synthetic heels. I am definitely a fan and hope to purchase a couple more pairs in different styles if my budget allows. Note: These are not available in stores so you have to order them unfortunately.

From Shade Clothing

Yeah this didn't work too well. I have a short waist and no hips so belting is tricky for me. I can tend to look very top heavy (like an inverted triangle). One way that I can participate in this look without highlighting my waist (or lack thereof) is to add a jacket or cardigan on top of a belted top. Kimberly recently called it "sandwiching". You still get the visual interest that adding a belt provides while also hiding figure flaws.

New boots

Excuse the extended absence. Between all the natural disasters and the power going out and what not I didn't have much opportunity to blog. I did end up wearing alot of my favorites last week and the beginning of this week as I said I would. That made putting together outfits much easier.

This look photographed alot better than I thought it would. I felt a little frumpy today because the shirt looked baggy and wrinkled up top (but that could be that I was looking at myself in the work mirror and that mirror makes me look ridiculously less cuter than I always think I look when I leave the house; anyone know a mirror like that?)

So I got some new ankle boots for Fall from TJ Maxx and I tried them on with this outfit after noticing myself pinning several looks that included ankle boots with longer, full skirts:

I have to confess that I like it however I am not sure if I can fit wearing these shoes like this into my current lifestyle. I generally don't wear skirts on the weekends and this may be too edgy/ risky for my profession where I worry that something like this might throw clients off (I am a dietitian and I work with low income mothers and babies). Also let's be real, these prairie looking boots with a skirt is somewhat of a bloggy trend and I have not seen anyone wearing this in real life in my little town... Maybe I am just being chicken...

So maybe I will try it.

Earthquake

Day 2 of "wear only things I really like" experiment. Except that I am notoriously picky about clothes and I can usually find something wrong with everything I wear (sigh...) But this combo of the tie neck blouse over the short sleeve sweater has been a favorite of mine the last couple of years. They just seem to go together perfectly. I always feel cute and professional at work in it too.

We experienced an earthquake today so that was interesting (highly unusual around here in VA)... luckily no one was hurt so far but it is funny because Dara moves to California and I am the one who gets to talk about a 5.9 earthquake!

Playing Favorites

I have decided to experiment a little this week and only wear clothes I really, really like. There are not many of them to choose from so this should be interesting. I am trying to adhere to the concept of quality vs quantity this fall as far as my wardrobe goes and I am interested to see if I can handle limited variety.

I have worn this outfit or some variation before. These items are true staples in my wardrobe.

In other news I have been doing the10 minute solutions workouts for one week today and I only missed one day (Saturday when we were visiting my in- laws). I feel a little stronger, alot more flexible, and my energy level is improved. Some days I feel like doing one and other days I do 3-4. Even ten minutes is better than nothing!

Cropped pants two ways

Got these cropped pants on clearance at Target this week. I am still iffy on them and would appreciate some input from readers- all four of you ;). I thought this outfit looked good but the pictures do not convince me that I should keep these around. Cropped pants are notoriously hard to pull off because they have a leg shortening effect and I usually have to keep my shirts untucked because I am short waisted so this may not be the best look for me.

I tried the pants again today and I got alot of compliments at work. Pretty sure the husband will hate them because I tried on a pair a while back and his only response was "I thought no one wore capri pants anymore..."

Wore the first outfit on Monday and the second one today. Not too fond of either of them. My personal style has shifted a bit this past year and I find myself falling into old habits when I do not take the time to plan outfits ahead of time. Blogging has made me scrutinize what I wear even more than I did before. I find that I am learning alot about my personal style from it and hope that I will continue to grow. That is why I am posting mediocre outfits I don't really like.

I was absent on the blog last week due to some emotionally challenging news I learned about a family member. By the end of the week I was physically and emotionally exhausted. I still feel like I am catching up on housework, etc. Hopefully everything will feel back to normal soon around the house and with my sleeping habits.

On a lighter note I found myself watching an infomercial for 10 minute trainer and decided that I had to have this workout system (funny how infomercials do that to you but it seemed perfect for me: I can do it in my home, I get bored with exercise so variety is good, it is only 10 minutes and I am lazy....et cetera, et cetera...)

I am a bit of a cheapskate so I was going to think about it for a while before shelling out 90 bucks for a dvd and resistance bands. I was in Target yesterday and in classic cheapskate fashion I thought I would look and see if there were any resistance bands with an exercise dvd and I found a 10 minute solution video with a resistance band for $12.99! I went ahead and got it to see if I could commit to doing 10 minute workouts several times a day and I LOVE it. I already ordered several more 10 minute solution workouts off of ebay and am looking forward to having a variety to choose from. Part of the battle of doing anything (for me anyways) is simply getting started. The beauty of these "10 minute" workouts is that you go ahead and start it because "it is only 10 minutes" and then once you get started you really feel like you can do more.

Sorry for the tangent I am just really glad I discovered these dvds!

Double Duty

I have blogged about this skirt before, but recently I have come to love it. I wore it two days in a row and could have gone for a third, but decided to stop myself. Here, I am getting ready to go to Imagination Station to enroll Cate for preschool.

Here is day two for the floral skirt- Date Night. I loved this outfit. I was going for a very girly look and felt very pretty with the result. Michael and I walked downtown to an Italian restaurant for dinner. It was a great evening, and as we walked around I felt like a chic from the 50's with the high waisted skirt, clutch and cardigan (not pictured here). The outfit honestly made the evening even better- lol! (Oh, and I just bought these wedges from Payless and was so happy with them...and the price- half off plus bogo- these only cost me $6!)

My house is dark and old and it is hard to find natural light (if you are thinking about the crappy beer then we can probably find that no problem). Thus the dark photos in an unusual location...

Wore my glasses today out of laziness. I also did not style my hair. So I would have probably liked this outfit better had I not been so lazy.

This outfit does speak to the power of accessories though. Without this necklace I would have felt even more of a plain Jane but instead I felt a little J Crew catalog (ironic glasses: check; undone hair: check; masculine shirt with fancy necklace: check).

When I was in elementary school everyone was wearing yin/yang necklaces and had patches of the symbol on their backpacks. I was reminded of this today as I got dressed. Weekly Musings... Maxi

Not sure how I feel about this one. Maxi skirts are a tough one for shorties (I am 5'3"). Not one of my better looks but it was comfy and different (and I only paid a few bucks for the skirt anyways).

Weekly Musings:

1. I need to remind myself that not everyone will like me. That is one of the hardest things to accept and I believe it is part of becoming an adult. I can be mindful of how I am perceived by people, but some personalities just clash and that is OK.
2. I wore my contacts successfully all week! One benefit of the humid weather is not so dry eyes....
3. I have been with the same organization for 4 years and I think I have maxed out my learning (plus there is no potential for growth. can you say "same pitiful salary for three years?") But I am kind of scared to try something new at the same time...
4. I ordered this vest and I am thinking I will either love it or hate it. It was ordered before I made my commitment to stick to my Fall list and it was kind of an impulse buy. I can see it looking really cool for casual outfits but not so much at work so it might not be worth the money. I will have to really think about it's versatility before I commit.

This may be TMI but I always feel my best the day my cycle starts. I am talking great mood, alot of energy, very positive, and I feel I look better. Is this strange? I feel like hell the week before ofcourse. Hormones are weird...

Still loving this vest. I am actually restraining myself from wearing it everyday...

Glad it is almost the weekend! Have been enjoying my pandora stations the last few days after missing actual good music in my life. Maybe this explains my unusually good mood as well?

Excuse my slightly rumpled appearance as it is raining outside. This is quite a casual outfit for a workday, no? Well... let's just say I had a "mental health" day which included Mexican lunch and a movie with my 2 younger sisters. Not feeling guilty here at all! Saw "Friends With Benefits" (loved Mila and JT in it) and I have to say it was a good "feel good" movie which I really needed because I was "sick" today, right (like all my "quotes"?)

This is a type of outfit I feel really "me" in for some reason. Unfussy, classic, but with a little edge. I have to say that I was productive today. I purged a bunch of items from my closet to try to resell at my local consignment shop. I was a little disgusted when I thought about all the money I wasted on items that seemed like a good deal but just weren't perfect for me. With all of the money I spent on crappy clearance and thrift store items I could have gotten something really great that I would still be wearing instead of trying to get rid of. I know alot of women can relate...

I am hoping to break that bad habit this season. I am making a list and I am sticking to it! I already turned down a navy utility vest that was on clearance today because really it would have been an impulse buy and I need to keep my eye on the prize. I am saving up my money for this jacket, some edgy ankle booties, a silk blouse, some colorful cords, and some work trousers.

Meet my latest and greatest wardrobe addition: this vest. And updating that link I see it is on clearance now! Snatch this baby up because I am in love. I think a utility vest is a great way to update alot of tired looking outfits. Plus, as a lover of jackets and structure (but not of being hot and sweaty), this is going to make alot of outfits for me for the rest of the summer without adding unbearable warmth.

I am seeing it this Fall with scarves, boots, and striped T's. I could go on and on about it but I think I have been gushy enough!

Well the husband was home early today so I asked him to take my blog picture. He only had the patience to do ONE PICTURE. It was 100 degrees outside though. 100 degrees where I live really feels like 112 because of the humidity (Don't you miss it, Dara!?). These clothes were literally peeled off my poor body as soon as we got in the house.

Weekly Musings:

1. Funny how I forgot I was doing weekly musings on Fridays. Oops.
2. I took several pics this week when I was wearing my glasses and I really did not like the way I looked. This is not a newsflash to me but just further reinforced the fact that I need to get the dryness and allergies under control so I can wear my contacts more.
3. Welcome to the dog days of summer. I am craving snow now. Funny how in the winter I will be wanting this heat (wait, no I won't...) I'll take winter over heat and humidity any day.
4. Anyone else planning (obsessing...) over Fall purchases now? I am saving my pennies for a serious investment piece and hoping to skim by with alot of what I already have.

Top- BR Outlet, Shorts- NYC & Co., Sandals- Kohl's (OLD)

This outfit, although perfect for a casual dinner out and a trip to the local Farmer's Market, is not providing inspiration for a blog post. So as not to bore either of us, I will keep this short. My three favorite things of this outfit:

1. BLOUSE- I love this top. I got it last summer from BR Outlet and love the fit/cut and the color/pattern. I have dressed this up and down and worn it year round.

2. EARRINGS- These pics don't give a good angle of my new earrings but I LOVE them. I was in desperate need of some new, versatile bobbles and these were perfect. They're classic yet updated. I got them on sale at Macy's for $7.99.

3. SANDALS- I got these sandals while I was still in HS! They are starting to come apart a little and I will be so sad when I can no longer wear them. (Allie, I got these b/c I loved the pair your mom had gotten from Kohl's...haha.)

Hmm...maybe this isn't any shorter than my usual blog posts, but at least we got straight to the point!

So the hard thing about showing my face now when I post photos is that I have fewer acceptable photos to choose from. I wore this sometime last week when I was trying to force myself out of my summer funk. I think it worked. I put my contacts in (even though it was a workday), curled my hair, and attempted to look put together.

I really love this emerald green color. I have a cardigan in almost the exact same shade. Most of my clothes are neutrals, but when I do want some color I gravitate towards greens and blues.

I can't believe it is almost August! I am excited for Fall, but then again I am about to become a college football widow soon...

I love this necklace. I got it out of a jewelry grab bag from the Salvation Army store. I liked layering the blues in this outfit with the necklace. Plus, this necklace along with the shoes, dressed up an otherwise mundane outfit. (One that I think I've posted here before...)

So, Dara has been slowly showing her mug here on this blog. My main reason for not doing this initially was, ofcourse for privacy reasons. Also, I did not know my future plans for my career and I did not want to risk any silly fashion blog making me look unprofessional. But, I am realizing that as long as no one can google my name and connect me with this site, I should be OK. Plus, its just easier not to show your face. I didn't really have to worry about my hair, makeup, or glasses because I never had to analyze them via photos on a blog. Well.... I am gonna start putting it all out there.

Face Wash: CVS Deep Action Cream Cleanser (Generic of Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser)

This cleanser removes all dirt and makeup and leaves my skin feeling fresh and healthy. It contains beta hydroxy which is what I think has made my skin feel soft and look much more even and clear.

Face Scrub: St. Ives Green Tea Scrub

I have sensitive, acne prone skin and so most scrubs are too harsh for my face. This scrub is perfect- it has a very fine grain that buffs my skin gently along with salicylic acid to help fight acne. It is gentle enough that I use it 4-5 times a week.

Moisturizer: Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle/Anti-Blemish Cream

I LOVE this product. As the name implies, it had retinol to fight aging and salicylic acid to fight acne. It is a light moisturizer that glides on and rubs in easily. My skin feels hydrated but not oily after application and it just feels like I've put something really nutritious on my skin. I will definitely be buying another tube of this when I run out. (I only use a pea sized amount per application-this goes a long way.)

Primer: Monistat Anti-Chafing Gel

I'm sure a lot of you have heard about using this anti-chafing gel as a foundation primer, but I wanted to put in my two cents. I have never been into using a primer- I'm not sure why I never tried it but I always wanted to spend my money on something pretty rather than the primer. This gel is amazing- it's extremely affordable, glides on smoothly, fills in acne scars and other imperfections and keeps my makeup in place and my skin from getting so oily. A tiny dab goes a long way, so a tube will last a long time. (Many people have compared this to Smashbox.)

Powder: Physicians Formula Airbrushing Mineral Powder

I purchased this product after reading Allie's review on it. I had been searching for a good powder and she was right-this stuff is great. It is buildable, goes on smoothly, doesn't irritate my skin (some makeups make me itch), and the SPF really works (I was outside all day in FL without any sunscreen on my face other than the powder- no burn or tan at all.) I apply the powder with a powder brush, not the little brush that it came with, as I agree with Allie that it doesn't go on as well that way. I did discover that I like using the brush it came with to apply my foundation.

Eyeliner: This is a recommendation, not so much on this exact product, but for a light/goldish eyeliner. I use this on my lower lash line and water line and it really opens up my eyes. I sometimes use it at the corner of my eyes and under the arch of my eyebrows as a highlighter. Its a great, versatile product that I use even on my most minimum makeup days.

Lip Shine: Sally Hansen Natural Butter Lip Shine in Instinct

This lip product smells yummy, goes on smoothly and feels moisturizing. I love the color- it almost matches my natural lip tone but is different enough that my look feels polished once I put this on. I have used this almost everyday since I bought it. If I want a darker look, I color in my lips with a nude lip pencil before applying.

Nail Polish: Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Caribbean Coral

I love this coral-pink color for summer. It's exactly the bright, fun color I was looking for at such a great price-under $4.00! The color goes on smoothly, dries quickly, and is pretty durable.

Reverse Look Up

Well, these pis didn't import in the order I wanted and I'm too lazy to fix it, so let's start from the bottom up today. These are my new summer flats that I got on sale at Kohl's this week- $13.95. I'm happy with them, they are my only summer shoe (meaning not a sandal) which adds to my wardrobe possibilities. Plus, they are easy to slip on and off and are comfy.

This outfit was comfy and Iwas pleased with it. Now, as I write this post, I feel like it's a bit too sloppy and nods to a Southwestern look, which I wasn't going for. Ah well, I'm not embarassed by the outfit but don't know that it will be a repeat.

Back in business

Terrible photos because of the poor light but I enjoyed the nice little thunderstorm we had. It cooled things down nicely and I was able to sleep with the windows open (love hearing the summer bugs and frogs at night). I got out of my funk a little bit this week by actually thinking about my outfits ahead of time. I got into a really good habit of putting together outfits the night before (or even several nights before) this past winter but got out of it since my summer dressing is so much more simple (not so many layers, no tights, etc). I put some more effort into it this week and felt better about myself.

This shirt was a great find at Goodwill a couple of weeks ago. 100% silk and very versatile (not to mention a J Crew look alike for this lapella top). This outfit felt professional and fresh to me for some reason (although this is that faded, stretched out cardigan I mentioned in my last post!)

I wore a hair tie on my wrist all week for some reason. Bad habit I guess...

We are going to a lodge in the mountains this weekend with another couple. Going to spend some time eating good southern food, laying by the swimming hole, hiking, and enjoying the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley (one of the most beautiful places on the planet as far as I am concerned).

Spur of the Moment

So there were a lot of things that make this post spur-of-the-moment. This outfit was not planned but frantically snatched out of the closet as we were running late. It worked, and literally took two minutes to pick out and put on. I wish all my outfits came together so easily. The belt was a quick find at GW the other day when I was about to leave the store. Love the colors and 'rope knotted' design. Lastly, this photo op was last minute, and from the bottom pic, you can see that I didn't have too many photo options, so I had to use one with Cate in the picture!

Summer Funk

This is all I want to do when it is hot.

Coming off from a long vacation it is hard to get back in the swing of things, including dressing myself. I spent July 2 - July 10 living in shorts, hats, and button up shirts to shield my baby skin from the sun. I am looking at pictures of myself at the beach and realize that I probably looked a little frumpy (What? No other 25 year olds wear long sleeve shirts and floppy hats at the beach?). Oh well I will be the one laughing when I look younger than my sun loving peers here in a few years.

I am committing to getting myself out of my yearly summer funk. Summer is my least favorite season and inevitably every year I get into this thing where I hate all my clothes but I don't want to "waste" my money on new summer clothes because I don't really like summer. So I have ended up wearing some seriously frumpy duds for literally 4 years (since I started working my first "real job" in summer '07). I spend the summer fantasizing about my fall clothes and waiting for the first nip in the air instead of enjoying where I am at the time.

So that is where I find myself now. Waiting and wishing for Fall and wearing a stretched out, faded cardigan to work everyday...
